The City of Knoxville is moving forward with improvement plans for Fort Kid. The City is committed to stabilizing the site, improving accessibility and making it a place for even more families to enjoy for generations to come.

Downtown Alliance Contributes Up To $250,000 Toward Accessible, Interactive Entryway to Fort Kid

As part of the reconstruction of Fort Kid, an accessible entryway path with interactive features is being funded through a contribution of up to $250,000 from the Downtown Knoxville Alliance – bringing City and partner funding for renovating the Fort Sanders play area to a total of as much as $750,000.

Hedstrom Landscape Architecture has developed a concept for the slope and path to connect World’s Fair Park Drive with Fort Kid. The terminus of the sloped path at the top of the hill would be at a newly created accessible entrance to the play structure and a new accessible parking area.

Online Survey and Images Released as Community Ideas Are Sought for Renovation of Fort Kid

In preparation for the Fort Kid public meeting on Thursday, March 12, 2020 the City of Knoxville has released several photos (see below), a site analysis (see below) and an online survey as part of its renovation plan for the park.

The three photos are from existing playgrounds and will be displayed at the public meeting as possible inspiration for the new play structure at the site.

The images showcase the kinds of materials and structures that families may want to consider as they are being asked what they would like to see at the renovated Fort Kid.

Directions: Take Cumberland Avenue east to 11th Street. Turn left at the light onto 11th Street; then turn right onto Clinch Avenue. At the first left turn onto World's Fair Park Drive. The park will be on your left across from the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Fort Kid

Fort Kid will close April 6, 2020 for new construction.

This elaborate urban playground is in Downtown Knoxville located between the Victorian Houses and the Knoxville Museum of Art.

With its thousands of square feet of slides, rides and swings, Fort Kid is a popular destination for school, church and daycare groups. Picnic tables and benches are available for parents to watch the wee ones play. Awesome view of the Sunsphere and is a short distance from World's Fair Park which also includes a playground, water play fountains and open space.

Fort Kid is maintained by the Public Building Authority (PBA).


HISTORY OF PARK


This play structure was built by volunteers during the city's 1991 Bicentennial Celebration.
