One of the number one concerns in Knoxville's neighborhoods is speeding. The Neighborhood Traffic Safety Committee was established by City Council to study the problem and recommend initiatives that will encourage drivers to slow down in our neighborhoods.

The Neighborhood Traffic Safety Committee has worked diligently and made some good recommendations.

One of the major goals for traffic calming is education. With the current television commercial "What's the Hurry? Drive 30," we want to remind everyone to slow down when driving through neighborhoods. Educational material will also be distributed through our neighborhood groups and schools.

The Knoxville Police Department is targeting speeders in our neighborhoods and ticketing them. Please see the enforcement zone sign link above.

Speed Limit 30 Unless Posted OtherwiseThe City is working with the East Tennessee Community Design Center to help neighborhoods that choose to pursue physical devices such as speed humps and traffic cirlces as possible solutions to their traffic problems. Neighborhoods that choose this route must build consensus and vote on installation.

Public Awareness and Enforcement efforts must be underway before physical devices can be considered. Please see the plan development and approval process link above.

The problem of speeding through neighborhoods can only be addressed if we all participate whether it's through education, enforcement or engineering. But, the one thing we can all do is SLOW DOWN.
