Development of Electronic Database Earns Employee Award

KPD View Officer Award Winners View Civilian Award Winners August 3, 2010 - Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Police Chief Sterling Owen named Jack Hampson the May Civilian employee of the Month for the Knoxville Police Department. Mr. Hampson has been with the department since October 2006. Chief Owen said that Mr. Hampson recognized that there was no electronic way to monitor the use of 'shop' loaner vehicles. The shop vehicles are loaned to officers whose regularly assigned vehicles are in the shop for service and repairs. The current assignment of the shop cars are done with a sign-out sheet. Chief Owen said, "Mr. Hampson's newly created electronic database will allow fleet services to maintain and manage the shop cars in addition to allowing a process for the technical services unit to manage the video files created from the shop vehicles." The database is now collecting data. Once enough data is collected, the database will be able to generate reports that will help make the loaner program more efficient. Chief Owen said, "Having an outside company develop a similar tracking system would cost thousands of dollars. Mr. Hampson was able to get the database up and running with limited resources, cost, and time." Mayor Haslam said, "We thank Mr. Hampson for going above and beyond his normal duties in developing a system that is not only benefiting the city, but has also saved the taxpayers thousands of dollars."
