September 2, 2004 - Mayor Bill Haslam announced today the city of Knoxville is seeking proposals for the redevelopment and/or adaptive reuse of four structures at World's Fair Park. Those responding to the request may offer proposals on any or all of the city assets, which include the Sunsphere, Tennessee Amphitheater, the Candy Factory and the Victorian Houses.

"World's Fair Park is a great venue for a variety of festivals and activities and a great family gathering place," Mayor Haslam said. "Putting these unique buildings to good use as part of a family-oriented arts district will enhance the park, downtown and the surrounding neighborhoods.

"My goal is also to eliminate or minimize the use of city government dollars required to improve and operate these assets," he said.

Mayor Haslam noted that while the city is open to considering any and all concepts, the city's preference is for proposals consistent with the input city officials received during its public process.

Earlier this summer, the city solicited comments from citizens about the potential reuse of city-owned assets at World's Fair Park, conducted two tours of the park and buildings, and held a public meeting to review suggestions and comments.

As a result of that process, the city is especially interested in proposals that include the following:

Sunsphere - Free, or low cost, public access to at least one floor, and a restaurant on one or two floors.

Candy Factory - Family-oriented, arts and/or related galleries, working studios on some floors, entertainment and retail on some floors, and a restaurant/lounge.

Victorian Houses - Studios, galleries and/or shops for art, crafts and related items, especially works indigenous to East Tennessee.

Tennessee Amphitheater - Concerts, theatrical productions, festivals, and other special events open to the public.

The city is willing to consider long-term leases and transferring title, with the exception of the Sunsphere, of which the city desires to retain ownership.

The deadline for proposals is 11 a.m. Nov. 30.
