The City of Knoxville's new energy report, "Knoxville's Energy Inventory: Government and Community Analysis and Strategic Plans," is now online in PDF format. The report provides a detailed snapshot of energy use in Knoxville during a single year as well as strategic plans to improve energy efficiency and sustainability within City Government and the community as a whole.
The City kicked off the energy inventory effort in August of 2007 when it formed the Energy & Sustainability Task Force, a 15-member advisory committee including business, industry, research, and government organizations. The mission of the Task Force is to develop concrete strategies to reduce the city's energy usage, costs and emissions and increase the city's overall sustainability. The City is well into implementation for the first generation of activities, as described in the report. Specific projects highlighted include a comprehensive energy/water audit of all city facilities, LEED certification for the Downtown Transit Center, institutionalizing energy efficient building practices for low-income housing programs, the Solar America Cities program, and more. The report also lays out greenhouse gas reduction targets and addresses next steps and new opportunities.
The report is intended to be a living document, as the work of the City and Task Force is ongoing.
