Park, Greenway, & Public Facility History
Each City of Knoxville park, greenway, or recreation facility has been named in honor of a prominent figure or community in Knoxville. The facilities were named after these people and/or communities for a reason--to be remembered. In an effort to preserve the history and legacy of the Knoxville community, the City of Knoxville Parks and Recreation Department has recently compiled information that tells the story about a majority of these facilities.
Over the next several years, commemorative plaques will be placed in recreation facilities throughout the city to educate the community about the history and heritage behind our parks, greenways, and recreation centers. East Tennessee history books, newspapers, encyclopedias, and City Council records were among the resources used to compile the historical information.
