The Law Department represents the City in all litigation in which the City is a party and provides legal advice and representation to the mayor and to all City departments.

The Law Department also provides legal advice and consultation to City officials, boards, agencies and prepares the agenda for City Council meetings.

Please be advised that the City Law Department may not provide legal advice to private citizens. For citizens in need of legal advice, the Knoxville Bar Association provides a Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS) program that offers a 30-minute phone or office consultation with an attorney free of charge. The service can be reached at: 865-522-7501 Monday -Friday, 9:00 a.m.-12 noon and 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Further, you may wish to contact East Tennessee Legal Aid at 865-637-0484.
