YOUTH ACADEMY

The 2008 Youth Academy is a four day academy offered free of charge to Knoxville area middle school students. The Youth Academy seeks to build positive relationships between officers and youth through an outdoor, adventure-based learning experience. Officers and youth work together as a team in numerous outdoor activities that may include several miles of hiking, biking and climbing. Students and staff will also participate in a community service project helping other Knoxvillians in need. This is not a camp for couch potatoes!

This year the academy will run from June 16 through 20. Applicants are those students enrolled in grade 6 through 8 during the 2007 – 2008 school year. Each session is limited to 20 students.

ROPES Course at Florence Crittenton Learning Center
Includes low and high elements and group initiatives. Experience will include getting campers and officers more acquainted, introducing concepts of teamwork, challenge and exploring perspectives of people from different backgrounds

Caving Experience at Cherokee Caverns
A day of exploring a wild cave presents an opportunity to further develop relationships with officers and other students. It is a muddy adventure with lots of challenging climbs and crawls. Helmets, gloves and flashlights are provided.

The Big Adventure at Cades Cove in The Great Smoky Mountains
A KPD officer accompanies each team of five. Campers compete against themselves, other teams and the clock. The team challenges are sequential, requiring the teams to draw on their problem-solving, interpersonal and physical skills to progress through the adventure. The tasks involve a myriad of activities and medium, including environmental, historical, and self-discovery, as well as physical ability.

Community Service Project at KPD Range
Campers work together to tackle the challenge and rewards of a community service project.

Graduation
Celebrate graduation with awards and a family cookout.
