Robert L. Key Sr. joined the Knoxville Fire Department in 1975, and rose through the ranks, holding the positions of senior firefighter, master firefighter and fire officer before being named an assistant chief in 1998. In that position, he planned, organized and commanded firefighting operations and emergencies in a district, and has administrative and scheduling duties. He was promoted to Fire Chief in May of 2006.

Chief Key also served as a hazardous materials team leader for eight years and served on the department's accreditation committee.

He is a graduate of Fulton High School and served in the U.S. Army.

Chief Key and his wife, June, have been married for 40 years and have two daughters and a son. Their family includes: Jenifer Sharp and her husband, Wayne, and their daughters, Sage and Presley; Christen Mayes and her husband, Joe, and daughters Madison, Lauren and Isabelle; and Robert "Chip" Key Jr.
