| HOW KNOXVILLE
IS HELPING HURRICANE KATRINA VICTIMS |
Katrina
Update September 13th
The American Red Cross has served as of Monday, Sept. 12 roughly
6,000 families who have evacuated to Knoxville from the devastation
caused by Hurricane Katrina along the Gulf Coast.
Less than 200 remain sheltered at the Knoxville Civic Coliseum,
and the Red Cross has closed a shelter at First Baptist Church.
Hillcrest Nursing Home is caring for about 20 evacuees.
Knoxville non-profit and government agencies, as well as hundreds
of volunteers, are meeting these families needs in a variety of
ways from plane and bus tickets to other destinations, local public
housing, food, clothing, supplies and access to free Internet
and telephone service to locate family and friends.
Knoxville Mayor Bill Haslam and Knox County Mayor Mike Ragsdale
are continuing to lead meetings with representatives of groups
involved in the relief effort to help coordinate the community's
response.
