Changes to KAT's Half-Fare Program

KAT is currently upgrading its technologies and procedures for the Half-Fare Program, which provides half-fare passes for those individuals who are unable without special facilities or special planning or design to use public transportation facilities and services effectively.

Effective Monday September 21, 2009, Half-Fare Program Applications will be accepted at any time between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the new facility at 900 Volunteer Landing Lane. (For additional information about the location of the new facility, click here.)

Please note that this is a major change from the current practice of only accepting applications on Wednesdays between 3:00 and 5:00. Individuals may come at any time to fill out applications or bring completed applications.

Another change in the system is that the individual will not necessarily receive their ID at that time. A photo will be taken along with the application and the processing fee of $2.00. If the application is approved, then the ID will be mailed to the applicant. Click here to print an application that can be filled out and returned to KAT (application is a pdf file; get the free Adobe Reader from the Adobe website).

Please note the changes to the agency approvals, as they are different from what is currently done. Agencies who will be bringing groups of five or more for the half-fare program will need to schedule that in advance by calling the Customer Service Manager at 215-7819 or 215-7829. Also please note the wheelchair policy and requirements. In addition, all half-fare identification cards will have expiration dates, requiring resubmission every 3 years or less.

ORANGE ID CARD RECERTIFICATION

We are updating our photo ID equipment and software with this program change, so we will also be updating everyone’s current “orange” ID card to the new system. This recertification process will begin October 1, 2009, and we will update the orange cards through December 2009. By January 2009, all half-fare program passengers should be using the new ID cards.
