Curbside Recycling Goal Has Been Met

20,000 City residents have signed up for the new household recycling program that began October 1, 2011. The first round of carts was delivered between August 29 and October 1 to approximately 13,200 households that signed-up before August 14. Approximately 3,300 additional residents participate in a subscription service through Waste Connections and are automatically included in the new service with no additional charge with City garbage pick-up. Another 3,500 residents have signed up since August 14th and will receive carts in the second round of cart deliveries scheduled for February 2012.

Interested in Curbside Recycling? Get on the Wait List Now!

Thank you for your interest in the City's Curbside Recycling Program. On December 27, 2011 we reached our initial goal of 20,000 household participants. As of this point, you will be placed on a waiting list. If customer's move or drop out of the program, or if at some point in the future City administration and City Council approve additional funds, participation will be expanded. Again, thank you for the interest in this program!

Please check back at www.cityofknoxville.org/householdrecycling for further up dates to the program.

    The program features:

  • No sorting - all recyclables in the cart together
  • Cart provided - a large cart will be provided by the City
  • Pick-up at the Curb - simply roll the cart to the curb every other week
  • No Additional Cost - City residents with garbage pick-up will have no additional fees for the recycling service
  • Recyclebank Rewards - Get rewarded for your recycling efforts! Earn points every time you put your cart out and redeem your points at national and local businesses such as Copper Cellar Restaurants, Three Rivers Market, River Sports Outfitters and many more. It is free to join, so go to www.recyclebank.com today and sign up.

Good for our East Tennessee environment by helping reduce the volume of materials going into landfills.

Households in the City limits of Knoxville that receive weekly garbage collection are eligible for the program. Apartments of more than four units are not eligible for this program but may continue to use the drop centers for their recycling needs.

Residents in the Central Business Improvement District (CBID) will have single stream location options and do not need to sign up for the program. Details will be communicated by the City and the CBID.

More details will be provided with your cart upon delivery.

Subscription customers of the Waste Connections household curbside recycling program who live in the City limits will automatically be included in the new program with the City. Existing customers will not be billed for their service after September 30 of 2011.

The City will maintain key Drop Center Recycling locations to serve multi-family residents, apartments and small businesses.

Remember 75 - 80% of household garbage in Knoxville can be recycled!

If you still have questions about the program, please feel free to email us at recycling@cityofknoxville.org.

Click here to SIGN UP TODAY to be placed on the wait list for future expansion of the curbside recycling program.

    Recyclebank Rewards Program

Recyclebank rewards you for taking everyday green actions, like recycling in Knoxville, with discounts and deals from local and national businesses. Recyclebank empowers communities to live greener lives and generates economic, environmental and social benefits for communities by increasing recycling, reducing landfill and stimulating local businesses.

With Recyclebank, residents earn points each time they recycle - similar to a frequent flyer program, only residents earn points for being green instead. But you have to sign up to get your points. Use those points to "shop" at Recyclebank.com for rewards in categories that range from apparel to automotive, restaurants to sports and recreation, food and grocery to health and beauty, electronics and more. Over the course of a year, an average family can earn more than $100 worth of Recyclebank rewards. This translates into real value for families.

Sign up today at www.recyclebank.com or call 1-888-727-2978. Recycling is good for the planet, good for Knoxville and great for you!

City Trash and Recycling Collection on Holidays

Waste Connections, the City contractor for household trash and curbside recycling will make pickups as regularly scheduled on most holidays during the year except for the following: New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, when they will pickup on the following work day after the holiday. If regularly scheduled pickup falls on one of the above designated holidays collections will resume on the next working day after the above holiday. Each day after, for that week, collections will be one day behind schedule. For example, if the holiday falls on Monday the collection for Monday will take place on Tuesday. Tuesday's materials will be picked up on Wednesday and so on.
