School zone flashers are installed on the basis of the safety of children walking to public schools. The flashers are timed to begin flashing 40 minutes before school starts and to stop flashing 5 minutes after school is in session each school day. The flashers are programmed to begin flashing 5 minutes before school ends and to stop flashing 40 minutes after school ends. Therefore, flash times will vary by type of school (elementary, elementary with kindergarten, middle, and high schools).

School zone speed limits on flashers are typically 15 mph less than the regular posted speed limit for a particular street. Go to the Knox County Schools Web site for the official school schedule. School flashers at private schools are paid for by the private school, but the Traffic Engineering Division provides maintenance and programming.
