The City of Knoxville hosted a final public meeting on the Downtown North Streetscape project at 6 p.m., Thursday, November 5 in the banquet room of All Occasions Catering at 922 N. Central Street.
Approximately 50 people attended the Downtown North Streetscape public meeting on Thursday night Nov 5th to review the final work product of the Downtown North Streetscape project.
The goal of this project was to develop a conceptual plan for potential improvements along the major street corridors in the study area and to prioritize those potential improvements.
The group concurred with the Design teams recommendation that the Central and Gay St. corridors should be tackled first and that Broadway and 5th Ave would come later.
The immediate focus will be detailing and installing physical improvements along Central from Broadway through Happy Hollow to coincide with the planned resurfacing of the street.
South of Broadway the hope is to restripe all the way to Depot.
As envisioned the Central Street project will add bike lanes, public parking, crosswalks and landscaping along the one mile stretch of road from the Old City to Happy Hollow.
After Central, next up for detail planning and execution would be Gay St from Depot to Emory Place. The concept is to enhance this already pedestrian friendly 3 block connection between Downtown and Downtown North with additional landscaping and potential road modifications at 5th Ave.
