The Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) operates two
airports serving Knoxville and East Tennessee. A nine-member board of
commissioners governs the MKAA. The board is appointed by the mayor and
confirmed by City Council. Members of the Airport Authority Board of
Commissioners include Kirk Huddleston (chair), Richard Krieg (vice
chairman), Meg Lonon, Lorenzo Grant, J. Randal Greaves, Fred Forster,
Joan P. Ashe, Arthur Seymour, Jr., and
Jeffrey L. Cornish.
McGhee Tyson Airport is the premier airport in East Tennessee, a
facility with more than 2,000 acres that serves the commercial airline
industry, air cargo, military aviation and general aviation. It is
located on Alcoa Highway (State Highway 129), 12 miles south of downtown
Knoxville. McGhee Tyson Airport recently completed a $70 million
improvement project. The project added ticket counters, new passenger
gates, improved concession areas, expanded waiting areas, new restrooms
and an improved baggage handling system that screens for security risks
while getting your bags to you sooner.
MKAA also operates the Downtown Island Airport, a 150 acre general
aviation facility less than three miles from downtown Knoxville. It is
home to more than 100 private and corporate aircraft.
