Until further notice, the Solid Waste Facility only accepts credit or debit cards—NO CASH.

HOLIDAY NOTICE: The Solid Waste Facility (both Transfer Station and the Household Hazardous Waste Facility) will be closed Thursday, December 24 through Saturday, December 26 in observance of the winter holiday.

City of Knoxville and Knox County residents may dispose of household hazardous waste (HHW) for free by taking it to the City's Household Hazardous Waste Facility located within the Solid Waste Facility.

Solid Waste Facility and Household Hazardous Waste Facility:
Mon - Tue - Thur - Fri: 7:00 am - 3:45 pm
Wed: 7:00 am - 11:45 am
Sat: 8:00 am - 11:45 am
Sun: Closed

NOTICE: As of March 2018 latex paint is no longer be accepted as HHW. Latex paint can be solidified at home and disposed of in your household trash. You can solidify with kitty litter or another absorbent material, or leave cans open until it dries. Please view this link on how to properly dispose of latex paint.

Residents may take up to 20 gallons of oil-based paint (20 one gallon cans or 4 five gallon buckets full or partially full) or 100 pounds of HHW per day.

  • Antifreeze
  • Batteries - Lead Acid, Lithium, and Rechargeable (no alkaline)
  • Bleach
  • Brake fluid
  • Car wax and cleaners
  • Carburetor and Fuel Injection Cleaners
  • Caulk
  • Computer systems (limit of 3/visit. Charges apply if over limit)
  • Cooking grease
  • Detergent
  • Drain openers
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Flea collars
  • Fluorescent tubes & compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • Fungicides/Wood Preservatives
  • Gasoline
  • Grease and Rust Solvents
  • Hand cleaners
  • Herbicides
  • Household cleaners
  • Insect repellent
  • Insecticide
  • Lighter fluid
  • MAPP gas cylinders 
  • Mercury Thermometers
  • Mothballs
  • Oven cleaner
  • Paint (Oil-based only. 20 gal. limit/day/container size. No latex as of March 2018. Please see information regarding latex paint at top of page.)

Unacceptable Items:
  • Latex Paint (Please see information regarding latex paint at top of page.)
  • Ammunition, explosives, fireworks (contact law enforcement at 865-215-4010)
  • Industrial, commercial or business generated hazardous waste
  • Medical waste (needles can be placed inside a sturdy container such as a detergent bottle, capped, labeled, and placed in your trash container)
  • Any household hazardous waste in commercial or work vehicles.
  • Any household hazardous waste from out of county residents.
  • Any household hazardous waste over 20 gallons or 100 pounds per household
  • Materials generated by any type of business (Commercial Hazardous Waste)
  • Non-propane Cylinders (NO oxygen tanks)
  • Radioactive Waste (including smoke detectors - visit for proper disposal)
  • Unidentifiable Materials
The following common items are not accepted as Household Hazardous Waste, but can be disposed of at the Solid Waste Facility for a fee. 
  • Air Conditioners/ Heaters
  • Refrigerators
  • TVs (19" and larger)
