EQUIPMENT REPAIR
A vehicle equipment violation may cost $60.75 or more per charge,
if paid-in-full by the scheduled Court Date. However, if you present
Proof Of Repair acceptable to the Court, your cost may be reduced
to "$0.00" (zero)!
Proof Of Repair may be via visual inspection by the Court
OR a valid receipt for the repair or part (light bulb, lens cover,
etc.).
Inspections: The Court Bailiff is the 'official inspector'
scheduled for inspections during Court. However, a Court Assistant
(Clerk) may handle simple routine inspections at the Court Service
Counter whenever 'Court traffic' is not too heavy. You may be asked
to park your vehicle next to the curb near the front entrance to
the Safety Building, and wait with your vehicle until someone from
the Court can come out to perform the inspection.)
Timeliness: Repairs should be made as soon after a Citation
is issued as possible. If proof of repair is not shown to the Court
within 5 months from the Citation issue date, the repair will not
be considered 'timely' and 'credit' may not be allowed.
Proof Of Repair Receipts may be mailed to City Court.
"Equipment Repair Violations are so noted on the
City Court Price List.
o $74.50 + is the cost per charge of the Equipment Repair Violations
when not repaired in a timely manner and not paid-in-full by the
scheduled Court Date.

Show your proof of Repair to the Judge/Bailiff in Court.
Fax a clear photocopy of your proof of Repair to 865-215-7440.
(Reference your name & Citation#, or DL#.)
Mail a clear photocopy of your proof of Repair to City Court:
City Court
P.O. Box 2749
Knoxville, TN 37901
(Reference your name & Citation #, or DL#.) |
Include any payment that may be due in a mailing to City Court
OR during your visit to a Court Service Counter.
|
| If your Citation includes
more than one violation, you need to determine how you intend
to resolve the other charges once you resolve Equipment Repair
using one of the above options. If you intend to go to Court
to speak with the Judge regarding the other violations, you
may easily show the Judge your Equipment Repair. However, if
you do not yet have your proof of Repair, that is no reason
to delay seeing the Judge now on the other violations. |

| WHAT CONSTITUTES A REPAIR?
- IF THE ITEM NOW WORKS, IT IS REPAIRED!
In many situations, an Equipment Repair may require little more
than a bulb or fuse replacement, which may be done rather inexpensively.
Many come to Court and report making the necessary repairs without
needing to purchase anything; either they had extra parts around
the house or they tightened some wires to make things work. Others
purchase a bulb, a fuse, or lens cover, red tape to repair a brake
lens cover, a replacement windshield, a replacement mirror or glue
to re-attach a mirror, and/or pay a mechanic to make repairs. Whatever
you need to do, once you do it, bring "proof of what you've
done to the Court so we may give you credit for repair.
You may show the Court the actual repair on the vehicle.
You may show the Court a receipt that represents Proof of Repair.
You may show the Court an empty 'parts' container as Proof of
Repair.
You may show the Court a replaced part taken from your vehicle
as Proof of Repair.
|
| "NOT MY CAR!... I DON'T
HAVE THAT CAR ANYMORE!"... YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE!
As the Judge would tell you, if you were to speak with him about
this in the Courtroom, legally you are considered responsible for
this violation since you were the one driving the vehicle when the
Citation was issued. Who owns (or owned) the vehicle is irrelevant.
Therefore, if Proof of Repair is not provided, you may have to pay
the full cost of $60.75 or more.

SUBSTITUTE VEHICLE
If you received this Equipment Violation Citation while driving
someone else's vehicle, or if since receiving the ticket you have
'gotten rid of' the vehicle you were driving, you may be relieved
to learn that the Judge will allow you to substitute a vehicle you
own/drive now for the one you were driving.
In other words, if you received the ticket while driving a friend's
vehicle, you may show either the needed repair for your friend's
vehicle or for your own vehicle, whichever you prefer. If the
'item' needing to be repaired on your friend's vehicle already
works on your vehicle
you've already repaired it! Just be
sure to 'show that repair' to the Court.
Or, if you received the ticket in your own vehicle, but have
since gotten rid of that vehicle; you may show the repair for
another vehicle you own or for one that you will be acquiring
shortly.
Everything must be accomplished within 5 months from the Citation
issue date and must be for the same/similar equipment item. Hopefully
when you get rid of one car with a cracked windshield, you replace
it with another with a 'good' windshield.
