Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Celebration Jan. 15-Jan 20, 2014
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.December 27, 2013 - Since 1982, the MLK Commission has been organizing a special celebration each year for the Knoxville area to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The week long celebration focuses on providing education and leadership training for adults and youth and promotes reconciliation through peaceful conflict resolution.

Part of the celebration also includes stories of racial struggles with emphasis on non-violence, equality, and love.

This year's celebration will embody the theme of "Moving Forward Claiming Our Greatness."

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:

Wednesday, January 15
12:00 NOON - Interfaith Prayer Service at Peace & Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church

Thursday, January 16
8:30 AM - Leadership Educational Symposium at Knoxville Marriott, Memphis City Mayor A C Wharton will be Keynote Speaker
12:00 NOON - Leadership/Awards Luncheon at Knoxville Marriott, John Seigenthaler will be Keynote Speaker

Friday, January 17
5:00 PM - Gallery of Arts Tribute Opening Reception at Beck Cultural Exchange Center
7:00 PM - Community Forum Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance at Beck Cultural Exchange Center

Saturday, January 18
8:30 AM - Teacher In-Service Training, location TBA, Dr. George J. McKenna, III will facilitate a daylong workshop
8:30 AM - Youth Symposium at Austin East High School
1:00 PM - Y.W.C.A. Race Against Racism at YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Center

Sunday, January 19
6:00 PM - A Night With The Arts Tribute, including An Original MLK Stage Production & featuring the Knoxville Symphony Chamber Orchestra at the Bijou Theatre

Monday, January 20
10:00 AM - Memorial March Parade
11:45 AM - Memorial Tribute Service at Greater Warner Tabernacle AME Zion Church
