Educator and Civil Rights Leader Sarah Moore Greene Dies

August 15, 2012 - Earlier today, Mayor Rogero expressed her deep sympathy at the passing of Knoxville Civil Rights icon and educator Sarah Moore Greene. Mayor Rogero's statement: Knoxville lost a great friend today. Sarah Moore Greene was an icon of the local Civil Rights movement and a relentless advocate for education. She was the first African-American elected to the School Board, but her impact extended beyond the African-American community. The school that bears her name will stand as a beacon of her life's work. We can best honor her by recommitting ourselves to equality and opportunity for all. Thank you Sarah Moore Greene for all of your contributions to Knoxville. You will be greatly missed. In her memory, all City of Knoxville properties will fly flags at half-staff. The flag outside of the City County Building was ordered to be flown at half-staff as well.
