City Repaving Streets in Fort Sanders Area
August 5, 2010 - The City of Knoxville will be repaving several streets in the Fort Sanders neighborhood during the next two weeks with the work taking place between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The streets include 21st, 22nd and 23rd Streets along with sections of Laurel Avenue from its west end to 22nd Street and Clinch Avenue and White Avenue from where they end on the western edge of Fort Sanders back to 19th Street.

The work is being conducted at night to try and minimize the disruption to traffic in the area that is home to both the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

The city is also trying to complete the project before the University of Tennessee starts fall classes on August 18. Repaving began on August 2, and is expected to be completed by the middle of the month.

The work is part of the City of Knoxville's program to pave and maintain streets on a regular basis. The city's Engineering Department seeks to pave arterial streets at least once every ten years, collector streets every fifteen years and residential streets once every twenty years.

The city is currently spending more than $5 million annually to maintain that schedule.
