Bush Appoints Mayor to Historic Preservation Advisory Council
www.ACHP.gov
September 2, 2008 - Mayor Bill Haslam has been appointed to a four-year term on the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation by President George W. Bush.

The 23-member body governs an agency that advises the president and Congress on historic preservation policy and issues as well as promoting the enhancement, preservation and productive use of the nation’s historic resources.

The president always appoints a Native American, a governor and a mayor to the council. The ACHP always includes the secretaries of the departments of Agriculture and Interior in addition to historic preservation experts, various other members of the Cabinet and members of the general public.

In the release announcing the appointments ACHP Chairman John L. Nau, III, stated that the council was delighted to welcome Haslam to the organization.

The other new addition to the board was Chairman John L. Berrey of the Quapaw Tribe in Oklahoma.

The ACHP noted that Haslam has been involved in efforts to renovate downtown Knoxville landmarks like the Bijou Theater, the Tennessee Theatre and the building housing the S&W Cafeteria among other projects.

More information about the appointments or the ACHP and its activities is available at www.achp.gov.
