2, 2007 - Williams Creek Golf Course has been listed as one
of the top par three golf courses in the nation in an issue of Golf
Range Magazine this summer.
The municipal course is one of three owned by the City of Knoxville.
The City also owns Whittle Springs Golf Course and the Knoxville
Municipal Golf Course.
"We already know here in Knoxville what a treasure Williams
Creek is," Mayor Bill Haslam said. "But it's always great
to be recognized nationally."
More than 60,000 rounds of golf have been played at the scenic
18-hole course, which enjoys views of the Great Smoky Mountains,
since it was built in 2003.
Beside the scenery, the course is best known for its undulating
greens, narrow fairways and elevated tee shots. Other trademarks
include the sixth hole with a 169-yard shot over two ponds, the
10th hole with a 166-yard shot over a ravine and Williams Creek,
and the 14th hole, which is a 245-yard par 3.
"We're proud that we can offer a public golf course that is
very challenging and shows off East Tennessee scenery at the same
time," said Sam Anderson, Senior Director of Knoxville Community
and Neighborhood Services and a recreational golfer. "I've
seen people who play on private courses every weekend come here
(to Williams Creek) to perfect their iron game."
The course's listing in Golf Range Magazine isn't the first time
it has received recognition. East Tennessee Golf News named Williams
Creek Golf Course "Best New Course in East Tennessee"
and it received the "Four Star Award for New Facility "
by Tennessee Recreation and Parks Association.
Not only is the course an award-winning facility, explained Williams
Creek Golf Course Executive Director Diondre Jackson, but it also
serves as the learning grounds for children in the First Tee program.
"The value system of this program helps children to better
learn self-management and interpersonal skills for life," said
Jackson. "To me, the recognition should go back to the people
that work with the kids everyday and maintain this course so that
everyone can afford the quality of a supreme golf course."
