Environmental regulations for training necessitates Wednesday afternoon closing of facility beginning Aug. 2
Solid Waste Management Facility
July 17, 2006 -The City of Knoxville's Solid Waste Management Facility, located at 1033 Elm St., will be closed at noon on Wednesdays beginning Aug. 2.

The Solid Waste Management Facility actually includes two centers - a Solid Waste Transfer Station and a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center.

The closing of these facilities early on Wednesday will give employees the necessary time to maintain equipment and ensure strict adherence to environmental regulations.

The Solid Waste Transfer Station processes more than 25,000 tons of waste collected from more than 53,000 vehicles, including those operated by the City of Knoxville. Among the items accepted at the station are recyclables, tires, building materials and construction/ demolition debris.

The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center processed nearly 170 tons of hazardous waste last year. About 12 percent of the material collected is latex paint, which is recycled for use in government buildings and by non-profit agencies.

"Amnesty Saturday" is held the first Saturday of each month and allows residents to dispose of extra garbage at no charge.

The facility's hours effective Aug. 2:
