UT faculty, staff and students invited to "Discover Downtown"

September 7, 2005 - The City of Knoxville is inviting University of Tennessee students, faculty and staff to "Discover Downtown" beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8 at Market Square.

The event will feature live music from the Market Square stage, samplings from downtown restaurants, door prizes, and information about downtown attractions, businesses and bus routes.

"We consider downtown Knoxville everybody's neighborhood," Mayor Haslam said. "Because of its close proximity to the UT campus, we hope this event will give faculty, students and staff an introduction to what there is to see and do downtown and encourage them to come downtown for dining and entertainment."

Soon after taking office, Mayor Haslam named a UT Student Advisory Committee to work with him and his staff in developing a closer relationship between the campus and the city. The idea of a downtown open house for those associated with UT grew from that committee.

The event is modeled after a successful community-wide Downtown Open House that was held in July.
